Drywall Repair and Installation in Toronto

Renovator Toronto hangs, tapes and repairs drywall across Toronto. Supplied and installed it runs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot, or $1 to $3 on basement walls, so 1,000 square feet of wall is roughly $1,500 to $3,500. Repairs in Ontario run $150 to $2,500 depending on damage size, and the useful part of a repair is finding out why the damage happened.

What makes drywall work good or bad

Finding the cause of the damage

A ceiling stain is a leak, a corner crack is movement, nail pops are framing shrinkage, and a repeated crack over a doorway is structural. Patching without fixing the cause means patching again.

Finish level, and where light falls

A patch that disappears under lamplight can be obvious in raking daylight. On a wall that takes direct light we finish wider and feather further, which is labour rather than material.

Dust control

Sanding compound in an occupied house puts fine dust everywhere the air goes. Containment at the doorway and vacuum-assisted sanding is most of what separates a tolerable job from a miserable one.

Repair or replace

When a patch is the wrong answer

A single impact hole, an old cable run or a plumbing access cut is a patch, and a patch on a flat field of wall is straightforward work. Three situations are not. A ceiling that has taken water is usually saturated well beyond the visible stain, and compound over a softened board fails again within months. A wall with repeated cracking along the same line is telling you something is moving, so the drywall is the symptom rather than the problem. And a room with many patches spread across it often costs more in labour to patch well than to strip and re-board, because each patch needs feathering and sanding independently. We measure the affected area and tell you which of those situations you are in before quoting, because the cheap option is only cheap if it works once.

Drywall jobs by area and by patch

Six scopes, quoted by measured area or by patch.

$1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft

New board and taping

Board hung, screwed off, taped, coated and sanded flat, ready for primer.

Quoted per patch

Hole and impact repair

Damaged board cut back to framing, backed, filled, feathered and sanded to match the surrounding wall.

$1 to $3 per sq ft

Basement walls and ceilings

Board over framed foundation walls, with removable access left where mechanicals need to stay reachable.

Around a new beam

Making good after structural work

Closing in after a beam, a moved wall or a new opening, so the ceiling line and corners read as original.

Correct board per location

Moisture and tile backer board

Moisture-resistant board and tile backer specified where the location calls for it rather than standard board everywhere.

Water damage assessed

Ceiling repair and refinishing

Water-damaged ceilings assessed for saturation extent, cut back to sound board, and refinished flat.

How we approach drywall work

Four standards, whether the job is one patch or a whole basement.

Cause diagnosed before the repair is priced

Water, movement, framing shrinkage or impact. Each one has a different fix and only one of them is a drywall job. We say which it is rather than quoting the patch and moving on.

Right board for the location

Moisture-resistant board in bathrooms, tile backer behind wet-area tile, and the rated assembly where a fire separation applies, such as around a second suite. Standard board everywhere is the cheap default and the wrong one.

Access left where access will be needed

In basements and around mechanicals we leave removable access rather than sealing in a cleanout, a valve or a junction box that a plumber, electrician or inspector will need to reach.

Dust contained and daily cleanup

Containment at the doorway, vacuum-assisted sanding where practical, and the space left clean each day. In an occupied home that is the difference people notice.

Drywall rates per square foot and per repair

Published ranges current in 2026. One Toronto job-data figure of $100 to $50,000 with an average of $5,802 rests on review data collected as of March 2022, so we do not price from it. Figures are before HST at 13 percent.

Our Process

How a drywall job runs

1

Diagnose and measure

Cause of any damage established, saturation extent checked on ceilings, area measured, then a quote stating board type and finish.

2

Protect and cut back

Containment set, floors covered, then damaged board cut back to sound framing or the space prepared for new board.

3

Hang, tape and coat

Board hung and screwed off, corners beaded, joints taped and coated in successive passes with drying time between.

4

Sand, inspect in raking light, clean

Sanded with vacuum assistance where practical, checked in raking light rather than flat light, then cleaned and handed over.

Drywall questions about repairs and new board

How much does drywall cost in Toronto?

Supplied and installed it runs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot, or $1 to $3 on basement walls, so 1,000 square feet of wall is roughly $1,500 to $3,500. On a typical Toronto basement, framing and drywall together come to $3,000 to $8,000.

What does a drywall repair cost?

An Ontario source gives $150 to $2,500 by damage size. We quote per patch from the measured area, and we price the cause of the damage separately where fixing it is what stops the repair failing again.

Why do you not quote per sheet?

Because no credible Canadian source publishes a per-sheet installed rate, and sheet count hides waste, cutting and the finishing labour that drives the price. We quote measured area instead.

My ceiling has a water stain. Is that a drywall job?

Partly. The stain is the visible edge of an area that is usually saturated well beyond it, and the leak has to be found and fixed first. Compound over a softened board fails within months, so we cut back to sound board and address the source rather than covering it.

Do you use special board in bathrooms?

Yes. Moisture-resistant board in bathrooms, tile backer behind wet-area tile, and the rated assembly where a fire separation applies, such as around a second suite. Standard board in a wet area is the common shortcut and the reason for the next repair.
