Where tile installations fail

No membrane behind the tile

Tile and grout are not waterproof. In a shower the membrane is the waterproofing, and tile is the wear surface over it. An installation with no membrane is a leak on a delay.

Slope that does not reach the drain

A shower base has to fall consistently to the drain across its whole area. Water that ponds finds a weak point eventually, and correcting slope after tiling means removing it.

Movement with nowhere to go

Substrates move. Large-format tile over a deflecting subfloor cracks along the grout line, which is why an uncoupling membrane and correctly placed movement joints matter more than the tile brand.

Choosing tile

What each material costs, and where it belongs

Ceramic at $8 to $15 per square foot installed is the value choice and suits walls and light-traffic floors. Porcelain at $12 to $22 is denser, less absorbent and the right answer for entries, bathrooms and anywhere that meets Toronto slush. Slate at $14 to $30 and marble at $20 to $45 are natural stone, which means sealing, more careful setting and, in marble’s case, a surface that etches on contact with anything acidic. Large-format tile costs more to install regardless of material, because the substrate has to be flatter and the setting method changes. How we set tile so it stays set

Substrate prepared before anything is ordered

Flatness checked, deflection considered, and backer board or uncoupling membrane specified for the actual condition rather than by habit. Large-format tile raises that bar, not lowers it.

Waterproofing as a system, in wet areas

Membrane, corners, the drain connection and the curb detail are one continuous system. It is installed and inspected before the first tile, because after tiling nobody can see it and nobody can fix it.

Layout set out from the sightline, not the corner

We set out so cuts land where they are least visible and the field reads square to the eye, rather than starting in a corner and letting the last row take whatever is left.

Movement joints where they belong

At perimeters, at changes of plane and across large fields. Skipping them is the reason a cracked grout line appears in the first winter, and it is not a grout problem.

Is tile waterproof on its own?

No. Tile and grout shed water but do not stop it. In a shower the waterproofing is a membrane system behind and under the tile, and the tile is the wear surface over it. An installation without that membrane will leak eventually regardless of how well the tile is set.
